We visited Gedney's on a visit to Roanoke to see my Father in law. This is a tiny town and anyone who is anyone knows Gedney's is the best food in town. We had fried shrimp and grilled chicken. Our server was kind and attentive despite being completely swamped with tables all night. We would definitely visit again if we happened to be in the area.
Insane variety of unpretentious southern cooking. Items are hit or miss, and the salad bar is nothing special, but there’s always something there that’s mindblowingly awesome. This place is totally unlike any other place I know. It’s got friendly service and dollar bills hanging from the ceiling and an inexplicable Christian gift shop in it. If you’re in the area, check it out. It’s canon of classic southern food goes deeper and wider than any soul food restaurant I’ve ever been to in NYC or LA (and I’ve been to a bunch). The greens, the fried fish, the cobbler, and most of the beige vegetables are better than your grandmothers.
We ate there on Thanksgiving and it was delicious. My brother-in-law was visiting and was so impressed he wanted to go back the next day for dinner. We got there a little before 4 and there was maybe 5 or 6 customers there. We ordered and had to wait 50 minutes for our food (we were just about to walk out when it came). He ordered 2 PC grilled catfish and they said the other would be out in a minute so we started eating our cold food. When they finally brought out his other piece it was about the side of my thumb! ! He was so disappointed! ! We won't be going back there again!!
Amazing country cooking. My aunt and uncle are local to this southern style down home cooking delight. The entire family loves this place. My top recommendations fried okra, stuffing, and banana pudding..Always packed and service is great.
Gedneys has good service, good atmosphere and average food. The salad bar, like most of the menu, leaves much to desire but it is technically a salad bar. The prices seem to be on the high side considering. However if you want to sit down and eat a steak, this is about it for the area. I would steer clear of the all-u-can eat "prime rib". Other than that, you'll be full when you leave.
